California Science Center Unveils Giant Lever Exhibit Featuring the Toyota Tundra Used During Space Shuttle Endeavour Transport

LOS ANGELES (May 31, 2013) – The California Science Center, in partnership with Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., unveiled  the Toyota Tundra full-size pick-up truck used to tow the Space Shuttle Endeavour over the 405 Freeway Manchester Boulevard Bridge during its journey  through Los Angeles and Inglewood Streets.  The Tundra is on display as part of the Giant Lever Exhibit, located in the California Science Center/California African American Museum parking structure adjacent to the science center entrance.  The unveiling commemorated Endeavour’s last flight STS-134, which launched May 16 and landed in the early morning hours of June 1, 2011.

Taking part in the unveiling were Jeffrey Rudolph, president, California Science Center; Michael Rouse, vice president, Diversity, Philanthropy and Community Affairs, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.; Lynda Oschin, chair of the Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Oschin Family Foundation; and former astronaut Garrett Reisman, Ph.D., who flew aboard Endeavour and rode in the Tundra at the time of the Endeavour tow.
Five year-old “future astronauts” Noah Lara and Samantha Comiskey, dressed in orange jumpsuits, demonstrated the science behind the Giant Lever Exhibit.  A lever consists of a rigid beam pivoting on a fulcrum.  By standing further away from the fulcrum, the two applied less force and were able to lift the Tundra full-size pickup truck.

“We are thrilled to unveil the Toyota Tundra as an addition to our Giant Lever Exhibit, as we commemorate the anniversary of Endeavour’s last mission,” stated Rudolph.  “We are grateful for Toyota’s longstanding commitment to science learning.”

In addition to the donation of the Tundra, at the unveiling, Rouse presented a check from Toyota’s Tundra Endeavour Tweet Drive to the California Science Center Foundation.  Toyota organized a tweet drive during Endeavour’s transport from LAX to the California Science Center, where twitter followers re-tweeted to raise $401,300.

“Toyota has been a supporter and partner of the California Science Center from the very beginning,” said Rouse.  “We are honored to continue our partnership through this fun, interactive exhibit.”

Hypebeast Take a Ride with the New 2014 Lexus IS Series

With the 2014 Lexus IS slated to hit dealerships across America, we were given a chance to experience the third-generation IS on a spin around North Carolina including Pinehurst Village, Carolina Hotel, Pinehurst Golf Course and Rockingham Speedway. The 2014 model of the Lexus IS series sees a dashing, sportier iteration — leaning towards a more angular outer construction. The 2014 IS offers a powerful road experience with the assistance of new dynamic signature spindle grille and the debut of LED Daytime Running Lights. Apart from the premium exterior add-ons, the 2014 Lexus IS sees improved welding techniques along with an all-new multi-link rear suspension adopted from the celebrated GS sedan — all employed in the smaller IS package. Meanwhile, its dashboard is inspired by the Lexus LFA supercar with a combination of a 80-inch TFT LCD which projects a virtual tachometer. The wheelbase has also been increased by nearly three-inches for legroom and cargo room, providing a loftier feel without forgoing complacency.

With the model being available later this year, the IS 250 — powered by a 2.5 liter v6 providing 204 horsepower — is compatible for the city roads with mid range torque, while its bigger brother, the IS 350 — 3.5 liter v6 with 306 horsepower — is a more powerful vehicle, matching its aggressive look with a larger engine. Both IS models are equipped with electronically controlled all-weather drive systems to help enhance traction and grip under different driving conditions. Along with the new features, up to five driving modes are programmed into the vehicle to offer a tailored driving experience under different circumstances. The IS 250 starts off with a price tag of $35,950 while the IS 350 sits at $39,456.

Lexus LFA owner gets town to remove speed bump

What do you do if you have enough money to buy a Lexus LFA but can't get the car safely to your house? Get local government involved, of course. Rune Berge Vik, of Stavanger, Norway, did just that after he bought a Lexus LFA (the only LFA in the Nordic region according to tv2.no) last year only to find out that it could not clear a speed bump in his neighborhood.

To remedy the situation, Vik got in touch with his city, which had the speed bump removed. Talk about your tax dollars hard at work. On the other hand, it's commendable that the man actually uses his supercar as a daily driver, and besides, doesn't a street-legal car have the right to access said public streets?

2014 Lexus IS gets TRD bits

Toyota Racing Development (TRD) in Japan has designed cosmetic and performance bits that give the 2014 Lexus IS a front-to-back workover. Different from the F-Sport parts we expect from Lexus here, the full body kit runs 437,700 yen ($4,285 US) and starts with air deflectors at the lower edges of the front bumper, through to side skirts, a decklid spoiler and a rear bumper with a diffuser and quad exhaust tips.

For 288,750 yen ($2,830) you can sharpen responses with new shocks, springs, dampers, sway bar and bracing. The priciest individual component is the set of 19-inch wheels, four of them going for 527,625 yen (5,170 US). There's no word on US importation or pricing yet, but done up all in black like the IS above, we wouldn't mind seeing it here.

Car and Driver Selects Lexus IS 350 F Sport No. 1 in Road Test with BMW and Cadillac

The Lexus IS 350 F Sport scored highest in Car and Driver magazine’s road test with the BMW 335i and Cadillac ATS 3.6.  In the June edition now on newsstands, editors wrote: “The crowning of a Lexus as the high priest of the sports-sedan world is something few saw coming – until we dove into the twisting, climbing, kinking, plunging roads around Leakey, Texas.  Turn-in is crisper in the Lexus than in either the BMW or the Cadillac…More important, the Lexus is utterly imperturbable…Additionally, the Lexus is lavishly, indulgently comfortable…Our drivers unanimously swooned.”

Lexus LF-LC Production Model in 2016?

Car & Driver is reporting that a production model based on the Lexus LF-LC concept could be released in 2016:

"A two-plus-two sports coupe concept from Toyota’s California design studio that could be Lexus’s answer to the Aston Martin DB9 if, of course, it reaches production. More expensive and more driver-oriented than the defunct SC430 convertible, this 'poor man’s LFA' (it’ll cost about half as much) will squeeze at least 500 horsepower from its hybrid powertrain."

A 2016 release date lines up with previous rumors — the magazine also suggests that the production LF-LC will be powered by a hybrid V8 power train and priced just below $200,000.

Wyland Foundation and Toyota Announce Five Cities as National Mayor’s Challenge Winners

Five U.S. cities were honored today for residents’ commitment to water-saving choices as part of the second annual National Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation. Separated into five population categories, the winning cities are Denver; Tucson, Ariz.; West Palm Beach, Fla.; Bremerton, Wash. and Laguna Beach, Calif. Residents in all 50 states made more than 44,000 online pledges to save water, use less energy and reduce pollution in four categories – home, yard, community and life – with potential cost savings of more than $30.6 million.

Presented nationally by Wyland Foundation and Toyota, the National Mayor’s Challenge had participation from 70 mayors across the U.S., including Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock; D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray; Columbus, Ohio Mayor Michael B. Coleman; Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn; Tucson, Ariz. Mayor Jonathan Rothschild and Santa Fe, N.M. Mayor David Coss. City leaders encouraged their residents to participate in the online challenge, which also provided access to regional water and energy resources along with cost-saving tips.

“This year’s challenge gathered the support of an impressive list of cities, mayors, corporations and nonprofits, all of whom shared our enthusiasm for working toward a more sustainable future,” said environmental artist Wyland, founder of the Wyland Foundation. “Congratulations to the winning cities. The environmental education and pledges will have an impact in bringing the conversation about conserving resources closer to home.”

At a May 10 event in Denver, Hancock will draw the grand prize winner of a new Prius c from the pool of winning cities’ participants, who are also eligible to win hundreds of water-saving fixtures and gift certificates to Lowe’s stores. A $1,000 Lowe's Shopping Spree will also be chosen from among the entire pool of U.S. participants. The National League of Cities, CH2M Hill WaterMatch, Rain Bird Corporation, Lowe's home improvement stores, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) WaterSense, and the U.S. Forest Service supported the challenge too. The additional support from well-known comedians through Comics for Conservation, a series of public service announcements, expanded this year’s environmental message. Pete Dominick, longtime SiriusXM host, stand-up comic and CNN contributor, was the official spokesperson.

Toyota’s partnership with the Wyland Foundation and the Mayor’s Challenge included a new element this year – an eight-state U.S. environmental educational tour to schools and communities, reaching 4,000 students. The mobile, 1,000-square foot Wyland Clean Water Mobile Learning Experience featured interactive exhibits to demonstrate the relationships between humans and water.

“Toyota has a deep commitment to environmental sustainability across our operations, making our work with the Wyland Foundation a natural and rewarding fit,” said Michael Rouse, vice president of diversity, philanthropy, and community affairs for Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. “By helping expand the reach of the National Mayor’s Challenge this year, we hoped to encourage more people to learn and participate in conserving natural resources.”

In addition to making water-saving pledges, challenge participants pledged to reduce their use of single-use plastic water bottles by more than 5.4 million bottles and eliminate 69.9 million pounds of hazardous waste from entering watersheds. By altering daily lifestyle choices, pledges also resulted in potentially 18.3 million fewer pounds in landfills and 2.2 million fewer pounds of fertilizer in the waste stream. Potential savings of 67.8 million gallons of oil and 2.7 billion pounds of carbon dioxide rounded out the final pledge results.
